LONTAR and Amethyst Arsenic
Behold the fantastic Sarah and Schooling cover design of the first issue of LONTAR: The Journal of Southeast Asian Speculative Fiction from Math Paper Press. LONTAR is founded and edited by Jason Erik Lundberg. What a thrill to have a lot of excellent work sent my way for the poetry section. The poems in the first issue are written by Chris Mooney-Singh, Ang Si Min, and Bryan Thao Worra.
Along with the super amazing Rosebud Ben-Oni, I will be guest-editing Amethyst Arsenic's winter 2014 issue. Submission period will run from November 1 to November 30. Amethyst Arsenic is a paying journal. I hope you will consider sending us your poems.
Recently Published Work and Forthcoming Appearances My story, "The Dogs," will appear on September 20, 2013 at Charlotte Viewpoint. Another story, "Zombie," will be reprinted in the third volume of Uno Kudo, an annual anthology edited by Bud Smith, Aaron Dietz, and Erin McParland. Here's the spectacular back cover art.
Here's the promotional poster listing the author lineup, as well as the issue's video trailer.
The phenomenal Rhys Hughes guest-edited two Ironic Fantastic issues of Sein und Werden. My tiny story, "Preacher Kim," is included in the first issue, while my "Misanthropes" appears in the second volume of Ironic Fantastic.
The author lineup for Ironic Fantastic 2 includes David Edwards, Aliya Whiteley, Sissy Pantelis, Steve Dodd, Trent Walters, Gaurav Monga, Joshua S. Walker, Paulo Brito, Tantra Bensko, Bridget Neate, Jason E. Rolfe, Lou Antonelli, Jonette Stabbert, Rhys Hughes, Fiona Funda Duffin, and David Gerrold, who wrote an episode for Star Trek. "Menu Entry for a Mr. Saunders" is in Painted Bride Quarterly #86 and is reprinted in the massive print annual. A copy can be purchased here.
This is the print edition of Bestiary: the best of the inaugural demi-decade of A cappella Zoo, which is guest-edited by Gina Ochsner. It contains three of my poems, "How Conrad Came Back," "How Conrad Got His Revenge," and "How Conrad Fell in Love." Read the reviews of the anthology at Sabotage Reviews and NewPages. To buy a copy, go here.
In July, my poem "In terms of seasonal hunger" was featured in Toe Good Poetry.
"Loverman falls in love with a corpse" appears in Bayou Magazine #59. In the said issue, there's a poem by Benjamin Sutton. It is called "Then, the Unabridged" and it is mindblowingly, achingly beautiful. Typifying the Me Generation, the striking cover art is by Jon Stich and is entitled "Bad Signal."
My poems will appear in the forthcoming issues of Tales of the Unanticipated, South Dakota Review, and Jelly Bucket, as well as in a themed anthology edited by Harriette Lawler and Agnes Marton who made Estuary: A Confluence of Art and Poetry possible. Also, a short essay of mine will appear in The Force of What's Possible: Writers on the Avant-Garde and Accessibility, a book of essays edited by Lily Hoang and Joshua Marie Wilkinson and to be published by Nightboat Books.
My story in Charles Tan's Lauriat: A Filipino-Chinese Speculative Fiction Anthology (Lethe Press, August 2012), which was previously reviewed in Publishers Weekly, was included in Ellen Datlow's longlist of honorable mentions for Best Horror of the Year Volume 5. Also in the list were works by Kurt Newton, Jeffrey Thomas, Joseph S. Pulver, Tracie McBride, Eliza Victoria, and Christine V. Lao. Books, Books, Books Noel Sloboda's Our Rarer Monsters is a gorgeous, gorgeous book that I blurbed and loved. The art is by Marc Snyder. And yes, the book comes with one glossy postcard and several matching coasters.
I once wrote about Soizick Meister's painting called "Mirage." It was a prose poem of the same title, an early version of which was published in Contrary Magazine and was later collected in my book We Bury the Landscape. Soizick Meister has been doing a series of paintings about an enigmatic figure she calls Mr. M. And this is my signed copy of the highly collectible Mr. M The Exploring Dreamer.
See it minus the book jacket.
This sinister Mr. M and his "surreptitiously stalking past" is my favorite.
My TBR mountain now includes Peter Tieryas Liu's novel, Meg Tuite's short story collection Bound by Blue, Michael Harris Cohen's The Eyes: A Novella & Stories, and Elizabeth Frankie Rollins' The Sin Eater and Other Stories.
I figure if I live for three centuries or so, I might finish reading all the books I want to read.

Jack, I added your new site to my blogroll. Things, things, things happened in between, thus the excruciatingly long time it took me to check my blog and finally respond to you. There's really something sad and hopeful about not having enough time to read and even reread. And there's also the matter with the high influx of great books that come out every year. But we've got to make do with what little (or in excess) we have. I hope you are well as always and are having a particularly busy and enjoyable writing time. All the best to you.
